Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and Happy Chinese New Year! Ha, ha - okay....missed about 5 weeks of blog posting, and I have truly been longing to return to my little blog world. :)

Taking care of Edward (see last post) has truly been a full time job! I've always had kitties, and never a dog, let alone a puppy. Wow, are they different to care for than kittens!! I had NO IDEA what I was in for. Between potty training, snuggling, playing, crate training, washing his bedding, giving him baths, taking him for walks, feeding, training, taking him for puppy play dates, vet visits, watching his every move, and more training...I'm exhausted. Did I have a baby and miss it?! I always knew mothers worked hard and constantly, but I have a new found respect for them, because I can barely care for a puppy properly. Despite my moments of feeling completely overwhelmed, I'm also completely in love with my new fur baby. :) He is worth it, and I'm slowly learning how to adjust my daily life around Edward and his needs.

I love my new studio space in our house, the light is just fantastic, and I can look out the window at the birdies and squirrels (and Edward bounding after them!). I haven't been able to get too much painting done lately due to my new puppy Mommy status, but I did just complete and list this dresser tray/dish on Etsy, a bit of cherub love for Valentine's day! ;)

Lastly, I'm thrilled to announce that I just became part of the Blue Genie Oasis Texas store! I love participating in their Holiday show every year, and I was honored when they asked me to join their shop! :) If you live in Austin, you should go check out all of the goodies they offer (also the Oasis is a beautiful spot to catch the sunset over Lake Travis while sipping a tasty beverage). Edward!

Moved into our new house a week ago (which was more of an ordeal than anticipated, involving a few all nighters and two U-Haul truck rentals)! It was all worth it though, I LOVE our new place and we are almost all settled in. :) Today was even more exciting though, because our new Corgi puppy came home with us! I love little Edward already, and he's full of sweetness and kisses. xoxo Our kitties even seem to be pretty tolerant of him (thank goodness). We kind of got a new world overnight, with different surroundings and a new little buddy to love.

Unfortunately, that has left me unable to paint new pieces, but my studio is set up again and I'm eager to get back to it! I hope everyone has a very merry season!

Happy Thanksgiving, friends! While I question the "happiness" of the origins of this Holiday, I am always happy to spend time with my family and eat my Grandma's delicious mashed potatoes. :)

Just listed this vibrant "kitty rocker" on Etsy! It's a hand carved piece from Thailand, that I completely painted with a new look. The previous paint job left much to be desired (if I do say so myself), and I couldn't wait to get my hands on it.

Changes...

Oh my, where to begin? First, Dave and I are moving to a new house! :) While I love living in a quirky older house and enjoy our neighborhood, there are many things that I'm ready to change. We've lived here 5 years, which is the longest I've lived anywhere in my adult life. There's definitely something to be said for having roots and creating your home just as you want it. However, there's something to be said for change, a fresh perspective, and room to breathe! Our new home is over 500 sq feet larger than our current, small pad. It has enough space for Dave and I to each have our own work rooms, and two bathrooms (omg, this is such a luxury if you don't have it).
There are too many perks to list, but one of the biggest, is that Dave and I can finally have a dog! :) I know, I know, - you're thinking, how many animals can you need, Leila? Well, we currently have 2 kitties and 6 chickens. Unfortunately, we are having to re-home the chickens. That is the major downside to the move. They are going to a friend though, so we'll get to visit our girls anytime. We'll soon have our new Corgi puppy, and he'll be ready to live with us come mid-December. I have wanted a Corgi for so long, I even decided on the name long ago if I ever got one. Isn't Edward sweet? :)

Meanwhile, during the packing and craziness of moving during the holidays, I'm trying to get ready for my annual Holiday show, the Blue Genie Art Bazaar. I have so many new ideas and pieces waiting to be painted for the show and Etsy! Can there be more hours in the day please?

Happy Halloween!

I love this time of year! Dave and I went to our yearly Halloween party as Gypsies (as are most things with us, it was last minute costume planning, and we were pleased with what was pulled together from my thrift store hunting!). Our hosts, Roman and Jana, were a wolf couple, with the most precious wolf baby....;)

They went all out with decorating for this party! They even had a satin lined coffin and a hearse parked out front!

I created a Ouija board for them, that Dave cut on the scroll saw and I hand painted. It's my first Ouija board, and I'm very pleased with the results! ;)

It was displayed in their "Exorcist" themed room. It was dark with a strobe light in there, and quite spooky!

I hope everyone has a fun Halloween! Off to our neighborhood "pumpkin patch" to go pick up pumpkins to carve tonight. :)

My paper dolls come to life!

Lisa, a student at City College of San Fransisco, asked if she could animate my paper dolls for a mini clip advertising their film festival. I got so excited at the thought of seeing my characters come to life, that of course I agreed! :) I just had to share it, as I'm thrilled with the result! (all the dolls are mine, except for the very first top hat lady)

I seem to be getting back on track! My long list of projects has come to the end, and I've scheduled myself to paint like a mad woman (more like a happy woman) for the next 2 weeks...love it! While I can't truly complain about creating art in any form, whether it be custom or inventory, it's so nice when I can simply create what I'm inspired to in the moment. I have some pieces cast that I've never painted before, just waiting for me to explore their possibilities. I also have all kinds of new print and stationary ideas bouncing around in my head. I've been feeling so very restless not getting to pursue the ideas in my mind, and my fingers get itchy for the paintbrush. ;)

To kick off my week, I started with a Mary bust. While she's a regular in my shop - I painted a new style veil that I think is so delicate and pretty! I also went to town with the feminine colors, not Mexican traditional by any means, but something different:

Yes, it has truly been 2 months since my last blog post! I have missed the land of Blogger and my blog buddies! So much has been going on, that unfortunately, I haven't been able to stay on top of everything. I'm back now, though! :)

I just completed what will probably be my last custom portrait painting for the foreseeable future. I love getting to paint on canvas, and seeing the finished impact of a vibrant piece of this size (and I do get to go color and detail crazy!). However, they do take all of my focus, and a great deal of time and love. Meaning, I just can't do it all (as much as I hate admitting that). I so wish I could! I'm not complaining, I feel so very grateful that my art is requested, I just hate that I have to tell people no. Karen and John requested this painting from me last year, and they have been sooo very patient. I was so happy that I was finally able to complete it for them! Karen wanted them to be seated, and I loved getting to paint the ornate chairs. Here is the progression to its completion:

Bread Box

Phew, I just finished painting and listing a large bread box! I have been looking at my bread box "collection" that I've been acquiring over the last 2 years, and finally decided I should paint one! This one was handcrafted over 20 years ago and is solid wood. It's a bit weathered, but with its darker stain, it looks like old Mexico to me. :) I tend to like things that have a bit of ware and a story to them. This one took me hours to paint, mainly because each side is a mini painting. First, I free hand the design in black paint, come back in with layers of color, and then fine tune and add shading:

Kitty Music Box

Okay, I actually let out a little squeal of delight over how adorable this music box turned out when I finished! (If I do say so myself...) I've seen lots of ceramic music boxes to paint, but the mechanism is always tired or broken - this one plays beautifully! I almost kept this one for my baby cat, Gypsy, to play her sweet music on her altar, but decided to part with it. I've just listed it on Etsy here, and I hope it makes someone smile! :)

I get a real thrill from taking something old and giving it a new life. This kitty music box had obviously been well loved, and the paint was worn off in parts.

Catching up....

I hope everyone had a good Memorial Day! I ended up using the long weekend to catch up on various business tasks (and ate some grilled turkey hot dogs - yum!). I re-organized my studio, and Mr. Meow helped me get things tidied up...

I also applied and was accepted into Team EFA (Etsy For Animals)! I'm so excited to be part of the team, and have been meaning to apply for quite a while now. It's for Etsy artists that volunteer/donate to animal charities, and want to use their art to help our furry friends. Speaking of which, I donated to 2 awesome charities in May, both happened to be for Pit Bull rescue and adoption. One of them is "Change of Heart Pit Bull Rescue" and if you go to their Facebook page, you can enter a contest to win a couple of my doggie themed prints (and also see some adorable dogs waiting for adoption)!

Grand Canyon!

I can't believe how long it's been since my last blog post, I've really been slipping...I have vowed to get back on track in my blog world. About a week ago, my Mom and I returned from our road trip to the Grand Canyon! It's more vast and beautiful than I imagined. In the canyon, it's so quiet, you could hear a pin drop. Truly a magical place. We had an amazing time, but I think it ended up being more of an adventure than either of us expected!

First off, it was in the high 80's driving to Arizona through Texas and New Mexico - very dry and hot as heck. When we reached the Canyon, it basically snowed off and on the whole time we were there. My Mom and I were determined though, so we just wore many, many layers of clothing (some poor tourists were stuck in their short sleeves). Our first day, we went on a 3 mile hike into the canyon (um yeah, this basically felt like 6 miles when you combine the steep descent and climb with the high altitude).

At the completion of our hike - we did it! :)

The next day, we visited the "Watchtower" which is an awesome structure built on the canyon rim in the early 1900's. It has an observation deck and really cool Native American paintings on the walls and ceilings...

After that, we went on a 3 hour mule ride through the canyon forest. Okay, I was so excited to do this, but this was not quite what I was expecting! My mule had some major attitude and pretty much wanted to do her own thing (can't really blame her there). She also got spooked by the train that runs right past the mule barn, and almost dumped me in a ditch (this also spooked my Mom's mule which took off) - the guide told me that wasn't supposed to happen and he was happy that I held on, because he thought he was going to have to fill out an accident report...We also got caught in a snow blizzard, not pleasant for us or the mules. Here's a pic from before the snow came down, and although it doesn't look it, it's so cold, I'm wearing 6 layers of shirts and pants under my jeans:

Basically, my Mom and I were exhausted every night when we got back to the room! We were so happy that we did so much though. :) On the way home we drove on part of historic Route 66, and stayed at this retro motel. Cool sign, right? (my Mom snapped this photo with the moon)

Blast From the Past!

I decided that it was time for a major clean out on my computer (I have all my listing photos saved from the last 3 years -woah!) While I was sorting through hundreds of photos, deciding which of my favs to keep, I ran across several pieces from my first year of Illustrated Ink. Basically, when I just started out on eBay and was trying to find my groove. Before I even had a blog! I never realized how much my style has developed and changed in over 3 years, but I guess I've painted almost everyday in that amount of time and my skills have naturally improved. It was reassuring to realize, because I feel that I'm always striving for achievement of creating the vision in my mind. I definitely get frustrated less often than I used to by my painting skills not living up to what I want. I swear, when I started it would take me an entire day (oh yes, I mean from noon until midnight) to paint a piece that now only takes me 3 hours. I think I averaged about $3 per hour, oh my!

Really though, when you are doing what you love, it's a thrill just to know that people want your work. I remember getting that first bid on eBay and I was sooo excited! :) My Mom and I freaked out calling each other, it was really fun! I still get a warm fuzzy feeling everytime my work is purchased, and feel so grateful and honored. That will never change. :)

Things I have learned about taking photos:

Lighting is key (I think most people know this, but I really struggled with my listing photos when I started). Natural light is best, and for me that's between 9 - 11 in the morning when the sun streams into the front of my house. After you find your ideal spot with a good backdrop near a window, decide when the light is best.

Too dark!! I thought that a black box on black fabric in a dark setting would be ideal - really?!

Too light! The black on the box is completely washed out as is the side of the piece (the bird is a deep purple, and it looks light lavender).

Having a decent camera (I now have a Canon Powershot A1100, and I love it) and a steady hand is also important, no one likes blurry photos. Um, also I was so in love with this tattoo fabric, but I can now see that it completely took away from my art. Just too busy. Avoid patterns and other distractions in your photos:

I don't think I could squeeze another pattern in here if I tried...

Believe me, I'm still learning everyday, but I'm happy to see that I've picked up a few things!

"La Catrina" Statue ~Sold~

I wanted to share my newest ceramic creation with you! I go through phases where I fall in love with a paint color, and I think I'm really getting into gold. I just love how bright and shimmery it looks on the Catrina statue. Yesterday, I purchased copper and silver paint that I'm looking forward to trying - I may be entering a metallic phase... ;)

I also just placed a large order for some new ceramic pieces, and can't wait to get my hands on them! Here's a sneak preview of one (you know I love mermaids!):

I'm hopeless when it comes to stocking up on items to paint! My studio shelves stay full of inventory, and I just love having a variety to choose from. It's so great having the freedom to follow my creative drive each day, not knowing in advance what I'll select next. Although, it is a little overwhelming at times having so many options! There are days where I become frozen and just can't decide what to make next - kind of like having to choose a flavor when standing in front of bins of delicious ice cream. I used to try and run my business more methodically, re-creating the same items and focusing only on popular pieces. While that's probably the best and smartest move for a successful business, that can get rather boring for me and my work shows it. Not to say that I ignore what people like and request, that would be silly! I just enjoy keeping things fresh, even though it makes for a bit of creative overload in my brain at times.

I'm off to work on a new print, or maybe I should paint a plaster piece, or maybe another paper garland design, or maybe... (my crazy ramblings fade into the distance)... :)

Icky and Yay!

Hello friends! Sigh, yes we are coming upon that time that self-employed people dread...tax time! When I got a regular pay check, I looked forward to that sweet tax return, but now, Uncle Sam definitely wants a piece of me! I finished my taxes the other night, and everything in our living room was covered in receipts (which my cats loved). At the same time it feels good to see my business growing (and therefore more taxes owed, ha!), so I can't complain too much. ;) FYI, I use and highly recommend turbotax.com, they give me peace of mind and walk my biz through every possible deduction. It does cost $100 to file with the version I use, but it's worth it to me.
With that fun out of the way, I'm focusing on my upcoming show, the Renegade Craft Fair! Last year was its first year in Austin, and I couldn't wait to apply this year. I was so thrilled to be accepted! It also comes to Brooklyn, San Fransisco, Chicago, and London. How much would I love to do the one in London?! :)
As usual, I'm wishing I had a troop of painting elves to do my bidding. I listed some new skullies in my shop, 3 of the 4 have already sold, but this pink lady is looking for a home:

This is Fiona and she is looking for a new home in time for Easter! Homesteading

With the addition of our new baby chicks (we have all 6 now), I've really been inspired to get more into homesteading. I've finally gotten around to doing more of the baking I've been wanting to do. I made my very first fresh bread from scratch, which was more labor intensive with all the kneading than I realized! It actually turned out perfect and tasty, wow! I then made a batch of cupcakes for my "Stitch n' Bitch" group, those actually turned out tasty too! Saint and Sinner

Do you guys remember my post featuring this thrift store purchase? I was so excited to find them in the store, that I practically ran over to the shelf where they were sitting...;)

Well, after much love and time, they now look like this:

These lovely ladies are candle holders, and I think they would be quite the altar or table display! I hand sculpted their details with Paperclay (the best invention ever!). The horns, flames, golden crown, and cross are all additions that I crafted. Just a quick post today, I must get back to working on my projects (using power tools, always a fun time)!

Thankful for March!

I have a new Spring garden started and we've just gotten some baby chickens! They are so precious. We plan to raise about six chickens in a coop in our backyard. It seems to be quite popular here in urban Austin. The first 3 chicks we got are Americaunas, they lay multi-colored eggs. We will be picking up 3 more Buff Orpingtons tomorrow, they are said to be the friendliest breed of chicken. We will be enjoying their fresh eggs, but we won't be eating the chickens, they are already like pets. Any good chicken name ideas? :)

Inspiration is a curious thing...my favorite time to think on new things to create, is as I'm drifting off to sleep or as I'm just waking up. My eyes are closed, and I'm hovering in between being awake and dreaming. My mind swirls around and my thoughts feel loose and are able to flow more freely. Sometimes if I'm having a difficult time finding the solution to finishing a piece or finding a place where I'm pleased with it, I'll fall asleep thinking about it. When I awake in the morning, I'll usually have a vision in my mind of how to fix it or finish it. The mind is a powerful tool!

Last week, I hit my first big wall in a long time. I would sit down to paint, and I couldn't connect my mind and hands. They just wouldn't paint as I wanted them to. I was making simple mistakes, putting the wrong colors down and painting sloppy messes. It was so frustrating and I felt trapped by myself! Painting for a living, requires me to do my craft on a regular basis (as I would if I were going to any other job). I used to think that I should force myself through these creative blocks and just make something, even if it didn't feel or look right to me. Now I believe that is all wrong! The mind, like the body, requires rest. I exercise my creative muscle all the time, and I think it finally said E-N-O-U-G-H! So, after frustrating myself for the first half of the week, I threw in the towel, and just took it easy on myself with the remainder of the week. I had a lovely coffee date with my Mom and walked around in the sunshine. I had a wonderful chat with my dear friend, Kate. I found that by Sunday evening, my spirits were lifted and rejuvenated. My mind has become unblocked, and the ideas have started to flow again like a river. So, I've learned not to force creativity, and you can't create inspiration if it's not there! Do you have any thoughts on inspiration or creative blocks?

It snowed here in Austin a few days ago, and that's pretty exciting and rare for us! Me, Dave and the kitties all ran outside...here's Mr. Meow testing out this strange new texture under his feet. :)

He decided that he hated it, and promptly ran back inside! On the topic of black kitties, here's my newest DOTD cat piece:

"Vintage Circus SIAMESE TWINS Paper Doll"

This past week I've been hard at work completing custom orders, but I did list a new paper doll in my Etsy shop! It's the latest in my "Vintage Circus" series, and it is a bit quirky. ;) I've seen other twin paper dolls, but they seemed to have a slightly depressed facial expression - perhaps, because it's not always fun being attached to your sibling? In my world however, these girls are content and accepting of the life they have, and quite happy really. They've also mastered playing the violin together (why not?)! My "Vintage Circus" has become populated with all manner of characters now, so I think I will focus on adding to my "Nautical Journey" series next. I was considering a Neptune merman of sorts, a pinup sailor girl, or a pirate beauty...any thoughts or suggestions?

Dave and I also got around to cleaning up the woodworking area in the garage this week...and...I set up my brand new power tool toy! A heavy duty scroll saw, isn't it a beauty? I never thought I would fall in love with power tools, but boy, I sure have! It all began with a hand held jigsaw, then you borrow your friend's band saw, and next thing you know - you're onto the heavy duty stuff! This guy cost a pretty penny, but I see it as an investment in my business, and I expect it to last a lifetime. With a scroll saw, you can make much more intricate cuts in wood, it's really ideal for artistic wood crafting. I have so many ideas, my head might explode! I hope to start playing with it next week...;)

This vibrant mermaid is the newest print in my Etsy shop. :) "Pura Vida" is a classic phrase from Costa Rica, meaning "pure life". While I normally paint pure death (ha!), I adore this phrase and the passion for life behind it. So, I decided to illustrate a very colorful and alive piece!

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a warm and happy holiday, I certainly did! Despite the general craziness and stress that seems to surround Christmas, I just adore that time of year. I'm always a little sad to take down the tree and decorations, and I'm one of the few that misses the Christmas jingles playing in every store. Although, I feel that 2011 is going to be a fabulous year, so I'm ready to usher out Christmas and welcome the New Year with open arms! Dave and I also celebrated our 6 year anniversary. :)
During my 2 weeks off, I realized how attached I've become to my computer life, and how much I missed being on Etsy and blogging. On the other hand, I also realized all I've been letting pass by while glued to my computer. Before I started my business, I didn't even own a computer, and I did just fine. My resolution is to find a balance between computer time and the simple joys in daily life. Has anyone felt this way, and if so, do you have any advice on finding that balance?

Ha, well originally I was going to have a "Sweet Score Thursday" post every week...since, I seem to have dropped the ball on that....we will simply have "Sweet Score" posts when I get lucky at the thrift store!
This week, I hit the jackpot! I purchased a baggie of assorted wood goodies (If you have a "Saver's" in your town, then you know the random baggies that I speak of). I was so inspired, that I promptly came home to paint these crosses (one is listed on Etsy, and the other two are off to my holiday show):

I also purchased an all wood bread box, that I was happy to pay the asking price for...but, was magically 50% off when I got to the register! I love to paint bread boxes, and now have accumulated 4 of them - need to get to those. ;) A collection of bread boxes tend to take up a wee bit of space in the studio!

Lastly, as I was heading to the register with my goodies, I spied these lovelies having just been put out on the shelf...I practically ran over and snatched them up!

Little Angelito

"Angelito" Altar Statue ~Sold~

Okay, I feel a little protective and motherly towards this little guy...Sometimes, my creations feel like my children - is that weird? The sugar skull in Angelito's hands is made from paperclay (I'm loving this stuff, btw!). I'm not a sculptor or 3-D artist (you should see some of the pieces I "sculpted" for my Mom in school, yikes!), but I'm pretty pleased with how I crafted his little skullie. :)

Here are my crafted cake plates made from vintage plates, candlesticks, and epoxy:

I have to say that dealing with the epoxy wasn't too bad, it was a pretty simple project! It's hard to make out the details in the pic, but they were a hit with my gift recipients. I love recycling the old and unwanted and creating something fresh and new!

Christmas Cheer!

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas around here! We had a little Christmas tree decorating party, with just us and the kitties. They always get so excited when we bring a real tree into the house! I have a completely girly tree, contrary to what you may think. It's silver and white, with pink lights. ;) I love birds, so it's full of owls, and small, glittery birdies clipped to the branches. Also, mini mirrored disco balls that catch the light. I so enjoy glass ornaments (but those have to be hung away from the fur balls clutches). Mr. Meow was quite helpful with the decorating, here he is unwrapping ornaments from the tissue...

Saki (pronounced Sock-e), observed the whole scene from her favorite perch in the living room...Honestly, not nearly as helpful as Mr.Meow!

Thank you so much for your well wishes everyone, I am now back to feeling good! Dave and I are going to get a Christmas tree tonight, and he's strung all the pretty lights on the house! I've started crafting my cake plates for gifts (check out my blog post on making these here), and I'll post pics on how they turn out! Anyone else crafting some holiday gift goodies?

One of my collector's, Teresa, shared these pics of her baby girl on her 1st birthday, with her new Illustrated Ink pull toy! Isn't she a sweetie? I love it when I get to see pictures of my pieces in everyday life, I feel so blessed to have such support and encouragement!

Right after Thanksgiving, the minute after I got my Holiday booth at Blue Genie all set up...my body just gave up! I have been down for several days with a nasty cold, and I think it came on from exhaustion. I've been laid up, wanting to paint so badly, but my body just wouldn't let me. Finally, I was able to finish this piece and get it listed today:

That's what this piece makes me think of...doesn't it seem like it should hold colorful, sugary goodies? :) I found this rather large vintage dish looking sad and alone in a dark corner, so I brought it home and gave it color and flair! I finished the makeover on the Geisha bust that I posted last Thursday! I was going to paint her Day of the Dead style, but in the end, decided to keep her alive and pretty. ;) I used paper clay to fill in her imperfections and eyes (since I wanted to paint them closed), primed the entire piece, and painted her. She has butterflies floating up her neck, and a little pearl earring. :) What do ya think?

My feature find for this week is this jewelry chest, made from solid wood and hand crafted. Love it! It's so pretty now, I'm wrestling with painting over it. On the other hand, one of its feet is broken, and it does need some restorative love. It measures 18" tall. How much you ask? $4.89, my friends! :)

This piece will be a pretty involved project, with sanding off old paint, sawing off the feet, then replacing the feet. That's all before priming and painting...phew! I'll post pics when I get it done, though!

Just completed these guys, one is destined for my Christmas show, and the other has just been listed in my Etsy shop! They turned out a little crazier than I had envisioned, not sure where they belong, they are their own category I suppose...they look like Mexican Mardi Gras Kings from a strange fairy tale, lol!

I've been listening to "The Forgotten Garden" by Kate Morton on Audible (awesome site, love it!), while I've been painting. It's a fantastic story set in Australia and England during Victorian times, but with dark twists and family secrets. One of the characters writes fairy tales, and I think her wild stories influenced my painted skulls!

I've decided to start a new themed post on Thursday's! Once a week, my Mom and I hit the thrift stores (it's kind of our thing and we are a bit addicted). I thought it would be fun to share my finds. I score so many awesome treasures to paint for Illustrated Ink on these trips though, so I feel it's part of my business operations (am I an addict justifying my behavior? Hmmm...) This week, I discovered this ceramic geisha bust:

She's large (about 11" tall) and will be quite the statement piece when I'm done with her! I will post pics of her transformation, of course. ;) When at the register, the clerk actually said it reminded him of an Asian Virgin Mary! Ha, perfect for me! The price? Hello $2.79!

I had a fun Halloween, I hope everyone else did too! We stayed in and carved pumpkins. My Mom came over and we handed out candy to the gazillion kiddos that come to our door. Somehow, despite the 10 bags of candy we had, we still ran out!

Tomorrow is a big day for me and many others, as it will be "Dia de los Muertos". I'm going to light the altar for my sweet Gypsy cat, and spend time with her memory. I felt honored this year that so many chose my art to decorate their altars in memory of their pets that have passed on. Since I lost my kitty this year, I took comfort in creating these pieces for others, as though we were joined in our grieving. I hope and imagine that Gypsy has many furry friends to play with in some peaceful place. :)

I leave you with my newest paper doll, "Frida"! I had to create her, since I love Frida, and think she was such an amazing woman. She's hanging with me in my studio right now... ;)

Halloween Weekend!

Hello friends! Halloween is here, yay! Last night, Dave and I went over to our friends house to watch scary movies on a big projector screen outside. They showed "Paranormal Activity" (which I had never seen). At the time I was having fun, but when we got home and went to bed, I was T-E-R-R-I-F-I-E-D! Dave promptly fell asleep, and I had the covers pulled up under my eyes like a kid. That movie scared the crap out of me, and I barely slept last night. It's so strange, because I enjoy watching scary movies, but occasionaly, one will just get under my skin! How about you?

I just finished up a cake plate for my Etsy shop, and I have to confess that I absolutely love painting them! I've had a difficult time finding a supplier for cake plate bases, and I used to just craft my own. I recently found a supplier for the bases though, and I ordered a few. :) I really just love kitchen/baking items is general, because in my dream world I bake all the time. I hope to someday get to all of the baking I want to do...I'll meanwhile just have to get my fix from painting cake plates! ;)

I've been hard at work (if you can call it that) on some "functional art" wood pieces! I used to sell larger pieces on eBay all the time, but since moving to Etsy, I haven't focused as much on them. Mainly, I like to keep my art affordable, and the larger paintings take longer, thus making them more expensive. I've had several requests that I bring these items back though, so I'm trying to paint my way through my huge hoard of wood items...here's a glimpse into my studio shelving (warning, it's a little scary):

"Mary Entre Las Rosas (Mary Among The Roses)" Altar ~Sold~

I had so much fun creating this Mary altar! I love that her arms are outstretched, as though she's bestowing her blessing. She stands on a wood shelf that I hand painted and embellished with 3-D roses. I added candle cups that hold small candles, and they create such a pretty glow behind Mary.

I also got some great news this week! I was accepted into the "Blue Genie Art Bazaar", a juried holiday show that lasts for 3 weeks in December. I sold out at the show last year, and it was such a fun event! For the next two months, I'll be hard at work stashing away inventory for the show, while staying on top of my Etsy shop - phew! This means that I won't be taking anymore custom orders for awhile, as much as I'd love to do it all, I have to realize that I'm a one woman show. ;)

During a walk through my neighborhood today, I was brainstorming about new print ideas...and then this little kitty popped into my head! I rushed home to put it to paper. Those of you that follow me on Facebook, have probably already seen this little guy, but I wanted to share him here too! My favorite feature on him is his colorful yarn tail. :)

I've been hard at work on custom orders, and I wanted to show the mask that I just completed. Teresa (one of my awesome collector's in the UK), told me that she wanted me to go crazy with color, so that's what I did! She's hosting a Halloween party, and wanted a 3/4 mask, so she could be heard easily when talking.

She also requested a simple, black and white mask for her husband, and I was kind of at a loss for what to do on it. No color, wha?! I discovered that it's actually really hard for me to not go crazy with color.
I really enjoy painting the DOTD masks, but I feel that the Etsy market has become so saturated with them, that I won't be offering them in my shop this year. That's okay, because I have a million other project ideas! ;)

"Lucky Horseshoe Wall Hanging" ~Sold~

My friend loaned me his standing band saw and I LOVE it! This horseshoe was cut using it. I'd been using a jigsaw, but the band saw is much faster. I never thought I'd be a power tools girl, but I've really been enjoying crafting my own pieces from scratch. I'm no longer limited trying to find the base pieces that I want to paint, if I can dream it up, it most likely can be cut out! Also, thank goodness I have my boyfriend to help me when I'm overwhelmed with projects, he's very generous with his time (and much faster with the power tools than me!).

I stumbled upon this photo by professional photographer, Katherine Chunn, and I had to share it. The boy is named Juanito, and there's something about this photo that really speaks to me. It so reminds me of my time in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.

I took the photo below when I was 17 and living there (feels like a lifetime ago). It was early in the morning, and the town was still quiet, except for a few early risers and the man sweeping the jardin (the beautiful garden in the center of town where people would gather). In the jardin, I remember that the trees were trimmed and shaped like marshmallows, and there were always flocks of chubby pigeons.

I just have such a soft spot in my heart for the streets of Mexico, its markets, and colors. It has a certain magic, yet is is so real and raw. Is there a place that feels magical to you?

I've completed another pull toy! These are so much fun to make! I named this little guy, "Felippe". ;) We have sooo many squirrels in our yard, as we have two huge Pecan trees. I love to watch them scamper around, and they make a noise at my cats, that sounds like they're laughing at them. My kitties will never catch them, and they think that's pretty funny (I'm also quite thankful for that)!

I also just listed another anatomical heart piece in my Etsy shop, and I finished up my anatomical heart piece for the Zzyzx Gallery of Natural Science in Los Angeles. They are having an exhibit on "Anatomy and Disease" in October, very Halloween appropriate! Speaking of Halloween, it's putting a smile on my face to see all the Halloween goodies flooding the stores. I can never get enough of all the glittery and ghoulish decor! Hooray, we're coming into my favorite time of year - I'm definitely a Fall/Winter girl. Summer in Texas is just sweltering hot and the mosquitos are serious business. I can't wait for that first crisp breeze of Fall to blow through!

"My Heart Sees You" Locket Necklace

Labor day weekend I was in the Etsy vortex (you know what I mean, where you look at one listing that leads you to another...and another...until your time has been completely swallowed). I started checking out the jewelry supplies, because I miss selling my jewelry, but the previous versions were just too time consuming and I had so many other projects that I wanted to get to. If you haven't noticed, I get so into all kinds of mediums, that I have a hard time staying focused on one thing. This is both a blessing a curse, sigh. Anyway, I digress, back to Etsy...in my fashion I got super excited about these vintage style lockets that I stumbled upon! Supply sellers were featuring them with these cool acrylic dome cabochons. These domes magnify your tiny image, and make them appear to glow. I ordered the various supplies I needed, and waited for all my little packages. I put a few together yesterday (assuming it would be a crafting disaster, as jewelry making is still quite foreign to me). Low and behold, they actually turned out pretty cool (hee, hee, if I do say so myself)! I'm starting with two images, but I'll add more if these seem to get any interest. :) In fact, stay tuned, because I feel a locket giveaway coming on!!!

Whimsical Week!

Wow, I can't believe it's been nearly 2 weeks since my last post! I hope everyone enjoyed their Labor day weekend. :) I was hard at work on my new projects (you may remember my post about wanting to create DOTD toys). I just completed my first pull toy, it's a custom piece for Teresa in the UK, but I'm making more! ;) Lots of trial and error on these, and a lot of help from my boyfriend who is more skilled with power tools. I hope that these are well received, and that people understand that I love animals and children (I'm not trying to scare children or give them nightmares)! These are intended for the alternative parent and the big kids that like to play with funky folk art! Here's the completed custom kitty:

Happy Sunday all! I must share my shame that it's 2:30 in the afternoon, and I'm still in my pajamas....Oh, I've been up for many hours, but as usual, I'm so eager to get going on all my projects that I forget to take care of myself first. Sigh. I've had about 3 cups of coffee, and have not yet eaten lunch. Everyday, I have to try to remind myself to slow down, eat a good breakfast, pull myself together and join the living! I could probably be shut in my studio for days if I lived alone...hmmm, possibly looking like "the crazy cat lady" from the Simpson's, covered in paint, and muttering to myself. Well, now that you know my dark secret, I'm going to share a few of my creations from this past week. :D

"Amor Eterno, Paper Mache Wall Hanging" ~Sold~

This weekend was quite eventful for me, I reached a personal goal for Illustrated Ink that I once hoped for, but didn't know was possible! I reached 1000 sales on Etsy (confetti here, please)! My first year on Etsy (also my first year of Illustrated Ink), I had less than 50 sales. I was mainly selling and focusing on eBay, and still had so much to learn about having an online business (I'm still learning everyday). Then I decided to pay more attention to Etsy, I loved that it was for artists, and it seemed to be more conducive to selling art than eBay. In the last year and a half, my little Etsy shop has grown and I've now reached my first big milestone!

I feel so very, very blessed and grateful to my collectors and supporters, without you, there would be no Illustrated Ink. Before I gave my business a chance, I sat behind a desk at various jobs as a receptionist, answering phones and greeting people. I smiled all day, but inside I felt so unfulfilled. I used to just doodle on scraps of paper behind the desk, people would see them and say "Hey, that's good - you can really draw!" That would just make me sadder, because I wanted to spend my days creating art, but was afraid to follow it and didn't even know how to get there. One day though, I just couldn't stand it anymore and my day job dues had come to an end. From there, I started my long journey to this point, and I can't wait to see what lies down the road ahead. I live my dream of creating art everyday, and I will never take that for granted. This is my cheesy, inspirational story - and I say if you want it, go for it! It will be so hard at times, and a lot of work, and you may fail...but you owe it to yourself to at least try!

I recently posted this rocking horse on Etsy, and it sold within the hour to a lovely lady in England. Yay, feel so loved when that happens! I got some great feedback on Facebook too on it, and it got me to thinking about vintage style toys. When I started wood crafting, I checked out all kinds of books on making toys (I just love the old style pull toys and jumping jacks). I make my paper dolls for adults, because I feel that adults should still get to conjure up their childhood memories and play! That's how I feel about old wooden toys, so my little wheels have been turning. I also have friends with kids, that have expressed an interest in "unique" toys for their kiddos. I'm not necessarily meaning that I would paint them all to be skeletal, DOTD style, but vibrant with roses and other embellishments. Do you guys remember the simple toys of your youth? I spent most of yesterday, designing and playing with my paper dolls! (Isn't my job tough?) I have so many characters that I want to bring to life, I could probably spend weeks straight making these. ;) Here are my two newest ladies, they belong to the "Vintage Circus" series:

Healing Words

I wanted to give a sincere thank you to those of you that have written such kind and heartfelt words of sympathy on my post about Gypsy. It has truly helped me feel not alone in my grief, and that means so much. Reading your stories of the pets you've loved and lost has made me feel understood. I truly appreciate you taking the time to reach out to me with comfort, and reading your words to my boyfriend has helped him too. I'm taking the weekend to grieve and heal, but come Monday, I'll start channeling my emotions and love for Gypsy into some new creations. Thank you again my friends.

Black Day

Dearest blog friends, I have to share the deep sadness that has happened in my life. One of my sweet fur babies, Gypsy, was hit and killed by a car yesterday morning. I know that is a risk you take when you allow your pets to go outside, but honestly we live on a street that runs into a dead end street, and there's an elementary school on the corner. As a rule, people drive slowly and cautiously through our area. It was a fear, but I just never thought it would happen, so far from any real traffic.

I was going about my usual morning routine yesterday, when I looked out the big window in our living room. There she was, sprawled out in the road in an unnatural way, all of 6 feet from our front yard. I looked around the house in a panic, hoping it wasn't her, praying that she was really just taking a kitty nap in the other room. I ran outside, recognizing her pretty fur and long body before I got up to her. The next part is so awful, that I've been haunted by it since I saw it. My poor, innocent baby had her head completely destroyed. I wanted to believe she'd still be breathing and not too bad off, or that she'd look like she was resting peacefully. The only comfort is knowing that she went instantly from a blow like that, and didn't suffer. I just sat on the curb and cried.

I know that many of you have lost dear pets, it's part of having them in your life and loving them. It's just devastating, especially to not get to say goodbye. I feel that I was responsible for her safety and well being, and I didn't protect her. She died so violently, that car didn't care how sweet or precious she'd been to me and my boyfriend. She was just taken from us. Life is truly so fragile. She was only in our lives for 15 months, we raised her from a kitten, and we are thankful just to have had her for that short time. Rest in peace little Gypsy, I will never forget you.

As a kitten, this is a pic from when I had the blog contest to name her. Some of you may remember that.

I'm going to make a special altar space for Gypsy, and I'm going to paint her a Day of the Dead piece. I have to accept that death is part of life, and I will celebrate her sweet spirit. I'll share my painted altar piece with you when it's done.

I just have to share my fantastic new purchase with you! I've been wanting to find a fun way to spruce up my Illustrated Ink packages, and have had the hardest time finding the right image. Then...I stumbled upon BlueDiamondStamps on Etsy! Hello! So many great and unique stamps to choose from. I had a few in mind, but then I saw that Liz (the artist behind Blue Diamond) takes custom stamp orders. I figured it would be out of my budget, but her custom work is completely affordable. I was able to send her my image, and she made it into the perfect stamp for me! She was such a pleasure to do business with, prompt and courteous. Now, I can label my packages with my very own artwork, no more being frustrated trying to find an image that represents my business.
Her stamps are so easy to use as well. They are clear and you simply attach them to a clear, acrylic block. You can see right through the stamp, so you can place it exactly where you want! You only need one block, as it can be used over and over with any stamps from her shop.

My long time friend, Laurie, is coming for a visit tomorrow! In preparation for her visit, knowing I won't be able to paint for a few days, I've been trying to get some new pieces in my Etsy shop. I'm torn between taking time off and having fun with her, and the fact that I have so many new ideas that I want to create! I'm a bit of a workaholic when it comes to Illustrated Ink, so it's probably best that I'm forced to take a breather. :) Here are my newest pieces:

Phew! The last couple weeks have been crazy! I finally have a chance to blog, and create some new pieces. I feel restless when days go by and I don't get to paint and get those creative juices flowing. Sea Rose

I'm so happy that I finally got a chance to create the piece that has been floating around in my head for the past couple weeks! It took some time for me to find the different elements, and I had to shop around to locate the perfect roses to match the ones in my mind. The roses are made of paper and hand dyed. Sometimes I get an idea, and when I try it out - it just doesn't work or match what I envisioned. In this case though, she turned out just how I wanted, love it when that happens! I have plans to create her in different colors, but I started with the colors of the ocean, so I named her "Mar Subió" (Sea Rose). I just listed her in my Etsy shop, what do you think?

I just created these lovelies, inspired by the Mexican Loteria cards, "El Corazon" and "La Mano". I love the Loteria images, they are so simple and timeless. I felt that these two symbols belonged together. Creating that which comes from the heart, expressing love through touch, or even manual labor versus the dreamer. Sacred Night

The last two weeks have been rather eventful, and unfortunately, not in a good way. Sometimes life feels like a domino effect, one bad thing happens and then a downward sort of spiral is created. My Mom was telling me that she believes the oil spill has created a dark tragedy that seems to be spilling and spreading into everyone's life. If you believe that we are all connected as I do, then it does feel as though that is possible. That horrible event aside, I know things will right themselves and life is already moving in a more positive direction around here. As the devil a.k.a. Tim Curry said from the movie LEGEND (right before he was cast into a dark vortex/black hole by the good hero a.k.a. Tom Cruise), "There can be no light without the dark." I loved that movie as a kid, and that scene just captured me. Needless to say, it's true, so one must learn to accept the dark times as part of life. With all this swimming about in my mind, I created this illustration, "Noche Sagrada".

I just listed this fun piece on eBay! I completely refurbished this vintage wood shelf and it has a new backing, dowel, and hardware. I hand painted skeletal "lovebirds", and they're flanked with roses and a sacred heart burns beneath them. It's perfect for the kitchen or would make for a cool "Day of the Dead" altar!

Is there something artful and sacred about something as simple as doing laundry? Yes, I believe there is an art to doing laundry and something comforting within the repetitive motions of everyday tasks. When I look at a vintage washboard, I think of the women that used it and their lives (and am thankful for some modern day advances). Although, when I wash my clothes by hand, there is some definite satisfaction that I don't get with just dumping things in the washing machine.

My dear friend, Kate, inspired my recent creation with her blog post and this particular quote, "It's like painting an empty canvas, hanging the laundry on an empty line". After reading her post, I pulled out a vintage washboard that I had rescued to eventually refurbish and turn into an art piece. I so wish I had taken a "before" pic, so you could see how sad this thing looked before I fixed it up. I disassembled it, cleaned the glass, re-enforced the joints with glue to make it sturdy again, then sanded and stained the wood. I inserted a new panel, and painted my fav sacred heart with an eye image. I named it LAVANDERIA SAGRADA (Sacred Laundry)! ;)

I took a hiatus from listing on eBay, because I have so much love for Etsy. Ebay is where I first started selling my art though, and it is still a fun place to list pieces (even though in seller circles, it's referred to as FeeBay, lol!). So, this evening I listed a hand painted cake plate. It features a colorful winged sugar skull. It's the first piece that I've stained, and I really like the look of the wood grain showing through. My inspirations often come from the most surprising things...I was on my new favorite site, swap-bot.com, and was excited to find a swap for items that "Marie Antoinette would have loved". I've always enjoyed the opulence and beauty from that time in French history. Well, May is not really black, it's lush and green with Spring. However, this little beauty I'm giving away is painted black, and I thought it seemed a fitting title. ;) Allow me to present, "Gothic Graciela"...

This sugar skull has been completely hand cut from wood and hand painted. She's my original, hand crafted design from start to finish. She's completely blinged out with crystal embellishments and a small cross. She meaures 7" tall x 5" wide x .75" thick. Her sides and back are painted black. She has a sawtooth hanger for easy placement, and is signed on the back by the artist (me). She's protected with sealant for gloss and a lasting vibrancy (although, she's designed for indoor use only). Do you have a special spot for her, she is looking for a new home!

Viva Frida!

Today is "Cinco de Mayo" (Spanish for "fifth of May"), and living here in Texas, it's a big day. It's a holiday held on May 5 that commemorates the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Usually there are a lot of celebrations going on downtown, and it's a good excuse to eat tasty Mexican food and drink.
It got me thinking about one of my favorite Mexican icons, Frida Kahlo. I'm sure most of you know Frida, she was a passionate painter with uniquely beautiful features. Her art and life are incredibly inspiring to me. I just listed one of my wood paintings of her in my Etsy shop:

Well friends, I'm still prepping for the Pecan St. Festival...it's been rather all consuming, and I've been lost in my painting world. I've been pretty excited about my new ideas lately, and here's a sneak peak at my new skull creations! ;) I draw these guys out, and then they are completely hand cut fom 3/4 inch thick board (not purchased templates). They are so fun to paint, I love having a new medium to work with. They measure from 8" - 12" tall, and have sawtooth hangers in the back. More designs to come... Of course, they will be at the festival, but I will be listing them for sale on-line in a few weeks!

I have never even used a power tool before, but I decided to go for it with the saw (after reading about the uses and watching a safety video on YouTube, lol!) After a couple test cuts, I cut out my first design. Here it is:

I'm so excited about the pieces my jigsaw and I are going to create together! This one will be for sale at the Pecan St. Festival in Austin, but I'll be making more for my Etsy shop. Please share your comments, and I'd love to know if anyone has any suggestions or requests for future cut pieces?

My new love, Hex Signs!!

I'm so happy to get a moment to blog about my newest creative passion, Hex signs! A few weeks ago, I stumbled upon a book on Hex signs that just fueled my inspiration. I had never heard of them before, and I find them so beautiful! What is a hex sign, you ask?

Hex signs are brightly colored decorations, usually geometrical and in a circle shape, in the form of large stars or other designs. They typically decorate barns and were developed by the Pennsylvania Dutch. "Hex" is the German word for "witch." Historically, these decorations were placed on barns to ward off the evil influences of neighboring witches or possibly the Devil. This is only one theory about the beginnings of hex signs, but a very interesting one! You can find them in Pennsylvania today, from many folk artists that keep the tradition alive.

I'm personally taken with their vibrancy and simple grace. I love all styles of folk art, and it heavily influences my work. In the Hex sign style, I could see a potential for merging my art with the traditional patterns. I decided to paint my own! I tried my best to keep to their color traditions and the circular pattern (mine measures 13" in diameter), while adding my own style. You can't truly appreciate how involved it is to create a "simple" pattern until you try it yourself, this one took me about 15 hours from start to finish. I'm hoping that the more I create them, the faster I will become as I get in the groove. Here it is, "Spring Sugar Skull", what do you think?

For all you stitchers, I even found a free pattern for a Hex sign rug by Hannah Kopacz! Yes, I am now crazy for Hex signs!!! ;)

I Love the Carnival!

Last night, Dave took me to the carnival! It's one of my favorite things to do, and I go every year when it comes. I love the rides (especially the "Tilt-A-Whirl"), caramel apples, the games (Dave won me a "Puss-n-Boots" stuffed animal popping balloons with darts), the lights, and 80's hair metal music! My Mom took me every year growing up, and it still holds magic for me.

I posted my button in the upper right corner, please grab it if you like it and spread the love! Now that I've expanded my blog to a 3 column, I have more room to post buttons for the blogs I enjoy reading. I'm off to start grabbing them...;)

I just joined today, and I'm already part of a tea swap and a thrift store swap. The tea swap requires me to send 4 tea bags/samples to 2 people, and I'll receive the same. I'm excited for the chance to discover a new tea, since I drink it almost everyday. I'm also psyched for the thrift store swap, since I love little treasures and vintage items. This one requires me to find something cool to send to 2 people, and I'll receive the same. You need to fill out a "likes and dislikes" profile, so people have a better idea as to what to send you. I think it will be fun!!
