Making of a Sugar Skull Mask

I purchased my papier mache skull from the Halloween section at my local Michael's craft store.
I started making my mask by painting the base with a coat of acrylic black paint. You can choose any color of the rainbow, get creative!

Next, I started on the detail with a pretty lavender-I love the way this particular color looks on black. Decorate around the eye sockets, and you can paint the forehead with pretty flowers, birds, or whatever you choose!

I added some white to make it pop! Don't forget to add the teeth!

Lastly, I added elastic cord, threaded with a needle to allow it to be worn as a mask. You can also use ribbon, punctured and tied through the sides of the mask.

Finished! Hmmm, the mask is pretty-but I look scary! Yikes!

Oh, fantastic! I'd love to know how you made the skull base-- or where you lucky enough to find them for sale somewhere?

I didn't make the skull base (I'm the slowest papier mache crafter on the earth, lol!). I got it at my local craft store.

Oh, I saw some of the paper mache masks at Michael's this weekend, and thought that there would be no way I could do them justice.

Not that mine would ever look as awesome as yours, but now I'm so inspired to go and get one and give it a shot!

Are you really selling these? How much? My wife and I are trying to dress up for Halloween as a Day of the Dead couple, but I wear glasses so I think it would look weird if I paint my face with glasses on. Maybe the mask has enough room to cover my specticles. -Mike

P.S. Love the art though...

hey, i really like the design that you have done on your mask.

i'm trying to create a similar mask myself, but i had to make the mask from modroc.

What would it take to get you to make to get this mask or a replica for my collection?
